Why should I study A Level Geography?

“Geography: it’s the must-have A-Level. In a world that increasingly values people who can work across the physical and social sciences, geography is all the range”The Guardian.

Are you fascinated by the way the world works? A Level Geography studies both the physical structure of the earth, and how the human race is affecting the environment, past, present, and future. If you’re interested in studying a related subject at university then our Geography A Level is the course for you.

Employability

Studying A Level Geography will allow you to study geography at university, which will have benefits in itself.

One of those benefits is employability. In fact, according to the Royal Geography Society, geography graduates have some of the highest employability rates.

In fact, the 2023 Prospects report, What do graduates do?, shows that geography had the joint highest full-time employment rate for social sciences at 54.9%, compared to the average of 50.1%.

Wide range of career opportunities

Whilst geography increases your employability rate, it also offers plenty of different fields that you can go into.

Here are just a few examples of the different routes you could go down:

  • Environmental consultant: An environmental consultant will advise on sustainability, including the effects of climate change, recycling, flood risk, and waste management.
  • Urban planner: As a section of human geography, an urban planner will create and implement plans for the development of cities and towns, using their knowledge of transportation, sustainability, and land use.
  • GIS specialist: A Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist will design, develop, and implement digital maps to access and store geospatial data.
  • Cartographer: A cartographer will focus on a specific area and collect information about the geography to design and produce maps, charts, and plans.
  • Geospatial analyst: The role of a geospatial analyst will include analysis of data, design of databases, and use of this data in other GIS applications for a wide range of employers and divisions.
  • Geographer/researcher: There are two main types of geographers, human geographers, and physical geographers. A physical geographer will investigate and respond to the Earth’s natural characteristics and behaviour. Meanwhile, a human geographer will study human behaviours, looking at human migration patterns, how human behaviour can change the natural environment, and much more.

There are also many more opportunities depending on what your interests are as well as what level your skills are.
