Homeschooling support

If you're home educating your children, find out more about how our courses can support you, from GCSEs to A Levels and beyond.

Education is compulsory in the UK for children between the ages of 5 to 18, however school is not. Many families want to educate their children away from a school setting and this is known as home schooling or home education.

Home educating families do not have to follow the National Curriculum and there is no single ‘right’ way to educate a child at home.

Here at Open Study College we offer a range of courses including recognised GCSEs and A Levels, and other further education courses that can support you in home educating your children if they are over 12 years old.

why homeschooling

Why should I home educate?

Some families make a carefully considered decision to home educate long before their child reaches “school age.” There may be religious or various other reasons for their choice, and ultimately they feel that in some way they can offer a more suitable education at home.

It is also a natural choice for parents who have enjoyed participating in their child’s early learning and see no reason to give up this responsibility when the child reaches the age of five.

Some parents send their child into the school system, but later find that school does not work for their child. A school setting does not suit everyone.

Often children may find it hard to “fit in”; some children have special needs; some children face bullying and may become very anxious and distressed.

Children may find that school does not suit their particular way of learning, so parents who become unhappy with the education which is provided in schools may also decide to home educate. Many parents feel they are better able to cater for their child’s individual needs at home.

How can Open Study College help with homeschooling?

We offer a huge range of recognised qualifications, from GCSEs and A Levels to other higher education courses ideal for children aged 12 years old and above.

Often, parents or guardians stop homeschooling at a certain age, as they are worried that the children won’t receive the recognised qualifications they need for their future. This is where we can help you.

All of our GCSEs and A Levels are fully recognised and will help your teenager get to where they want to, whether that is college, university or a certain job role.

We have personal tutor support that are experts in their field, meaning you as a home educator will receive extra support. They are there to answer any questions you may have on a particular topic and can help with exam prep. You won’t be alone in your home education journey and with the extra support you need, you can be confident knowing your teenager will be following the curriculum.

You can study at your own pace, which is perfect for those who don’t like the structure of school learning. The only deadline would be exams taking place at the end of the ‘academic’ year.

Which homeschooling approach is right for me?

There are many ways to home educate, there is no right or wrong way. The method of learning that you choose is entirely up to you and your child; you can use any approach that you consider to be suitable.

A family’s approach to home education is likely to grow and evolve over time. It is important to realise that the law does not require you to have to have a perfect plan in place before you begin home education and this can adapt over time.
