Awarding body

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) are a leading organisation whose qualifications cover the health, safety, and environmental sectors. Their qualifications are recognised internationally, helping professionals to demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities, as well as raising the standards in the health and safety industry.

Extra information

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. However, you will need a good grasp of English to ensure they understand the terminology covered within the course materials.

You will have up to one year to complete your course, which is plenty of time to ensure you are able to study for your course at your own pace. The approximate study time is 67 hours, but you can take as much or as little time as you need.

You will study for your course entirely online and receive full tutor support through email. The online portal makes learning more interactive with presentations, audio recordings and interactive modules.

You will need to complete one online open book exam (EMC1) and one practical assessment (EMC2). You can find full details of what is included in these assessments below.

Open book exam: EMC1 – Environmental management

This is a digital assessment which can be taken remotely. You will be required to review a real-life scenario and answer theoretical and practical questions on environmental management. 

Learners will have 24 hours to access, complete, and submit their paper, starting from 11am (UK time) on the examination date. Examinations for this qualification will take place once a quarter in March, June, September, and December.

Exam dates for your open book assessment are in March, June, September, and December.

If you choose to add your exams to your enrolment with Open Study College, we will book and pay for your assessments for you. If you do not add the exams option to your enrolment, you will be responsible for booking and paying for your assessments if you wish to achieve the qualification.

Practical assessment: EMC2 – Assessing environmental aspects and associated impacts

A practical assessment where you will be required to assess environmental aspects and impacts in your chosen workplace.

Please note, if you cannot use your current workplace for your practical assessment for whatever reason, you can choose an alternative place of work such as a family member or friend’s workplace.

Once you have successfully completed your exams, you will receive your industry-recognised NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate. Completing this course will also allow you to gain TechCIWEM and AIEMA membership.
