What is an Access to Higher Education Diploma?

An Access to Higher Education Diploma is a nationally recognised level three qualification that offers an alternative to the traditional route to university. They are an equivalent to three A Levels and they don’t include exams, making them the ideal choice for anyone returning to education who are considering progressing to university in the future.  

The diplomas are designed to be completed within two years. You’ll study from home in your own time, with a timetable to help you stay on track. Once you have successfully completed the qualification, you will receive UCAS points to help you get into university.

    As a nationally recognised qualification, Access to HE Diplomas are widely accepted by universities throughout the UK. As an equivalent to three A Levels, learners will gain the equivalent UCAS points they need to support their university application.  

    Universities are involved in the development of the learning materials for Access to Higher Education courses to ensure that the unit content is relevant. This means that learners completing an Access to HE Diploma will feel fully prepared and ready to progress to university.  

    Every year, approximately 20,000 students apply to a UK university having studied an Access to HE course, and they then go on to study a wide range of subjects. 

    ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA (HEALTH)

    This course is designed for anyone looking to begin a career in the healthcare industry. During the first year of your studies, you’ll cover topics such as human biology and the factors that affect human health. The second year of your course will cover psychology, the principles of values-based healthcare, and how you can promote the health of your patients. 

    Once you have successfully completed your course, you can enrol on a variety of healthcare-related degrees, including: 

    • Nursing 
    • Midwifery 
    • Other healthcare-related degrees

    ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA (PUBLIC SERVICES)

    This course is designed for anyone looking to begin a career in the emergency services, legal, or military industries. Your first year of studies will cover topics such as psychology and the sociology of crime and deviance. In the second year of your course, you will explore topics including an introduction to law enforcement and policing, and an overview of crime, including the causes of crime, criminological theories, and the effect of crime on the victim. 

    Once you have successfully completed your course, you can enrol on a variety of emergency services-related degrees, including: 

    • Policing degree apprenticeship 
    • Fire and rescue degree 
    • Social policy and law degree 
    • Sociology degree 
    • Other public service-related degree 

    You could also pursue a career in the military after completing this course.
